Intro to Blood Earth Fire
Allow 40 minutes
LEVEL 3
This exhibition tells the dramatic story of how the forests of Aotearoa New Zealand were rapidly cleared, the wetlands drained, new species introduced – and others lost for all time. It's also the story of how the people of Aotearoa have come to love and care for this land.
Aotearoa was one of the last places in the world settled by people. Explore the ways that the first arrivals here forged deep connections with Papatūānuku, the earth mother.
Waves of settlers, first from the Pacific and later Europe, completely changed the landscape. Vast forests were stripped and replaced with farmland. Many agricultural animals were introduced. Ever wondered how sheep see the world? Find out with ‘Sheep cam’.
Some species of plants and animals that arrived attacked the environment. In the shipping container, imagine you’re a quarantine officer and hunt for dangerous invader species.
Balancing the story of change and loss is the story of kaitiakitanga – care and nurture of the natural world. Explore the maramataka, or Māori lunar calendar, to find the best days to fish, plant, harvest, or relax.
Today, many people in Aotearoa work to preserve the biodiversity of this land. Watch short films where New Zealanders talk about their own tūrangawaewae – the place they belong.
