Intro to Bush City

Level 1 outdoors – go across the bridge from Te Taiao | Nature, Level 2
Step into the wilderness right here in the museum. Bush City is a living, growing exhibition with more than 100 native plant species and some of the oldest rocks in Aotearoa New Zealand.
In one short walk, you can sample many of the natural environments of Aotearoa. Cross the bridge from Te Taiao | Nature and enter lush native bush. A little further on, discover volcanic rocks and the hardy plants that thrive in subalpine regions. Stroll through a wetland, then delve into a replica limestone cave.
Take a break
Bush City is a great place to relax. Enjoy the harbour view, or take a seat by the stream and take in the sights and smells of the forest. You’ll likely spot a tūī or other native bird.
Enjoy family-friendly activities
Dig for fossils, cross a swing bridge, or enter a cave to discover glow-worms, stalactites, and the bones of extinct moa.
