Rākau and his auntie will guide you. First, you’ll feel a small warning shake. Drop, cover, and hold – or just hold on to the table – before the bigger shake starts.

The Earthquake House has been one of Te Papa’s most loved experiences since opening day in 1998. But it was redesigned after devastating earthquakes struck Canterbury in 2010 and 2011, and Kaikōura in 2016. The focus of the house is now on preparedness and action.

The shaking is the same strength that people felt in Kaiapoi, Canterbury, during the Christchurch Earthquake of magnitude 6.3 in 2011.
